Congratulations to Hurling Club of Madison for their victory in the inaugural Fox River Hurling Club Winter Classic! It was a great turnout and an exciting day of hurling.
Our friends from Minnesota were not able to make the trip down this year. That left a full length match between Fox River and Madison to settle who would take home the Winter Cup.
Madison jumped out early with a few quick scores, and played solid in the backs throughout the day limiting Fox River's scoring opportunities. Movement, speed, and passing were good -- and are things we will continue to work on throughout the year. Fox River fought hard down the stretch, but ultimately the match went Madison's way.
The championship match was followed up with a stick toss match which was good fun. After that everyone went out for grub in downtown Appleton -- where the '49ers team bus would pull up outside and unload. Turns out that Anthony Davis was not impressed -- we hope it wasn't the hurlers which changed his opinion!
Thanks to the players and supporters who traveled, and to Fox River HC for hosting. We hope for the event to grow in years to come, and look forward to defending our cup!
Photos to be posted this week once they're in...check back!

This past weekend was the North American County Board Championships in Cleveland, Ohio. The Hurling Club of Madison sent 19 players to contest the Junior C national hurling championship. It was a stacked field with 12 clubs from around the country entering the competition.
Right away on Friday, the Hurling Club of Madison established some dominance on the field defeating two clubs, the Twin Cities Robert Emmets and the Denver Gaels. On Saturday afternoon, the Hurling Club of Madison moved onto the semifinal match against the Pittsburgh Pucas. It was an extremely competitive match, but in the end the Hurling Club of Madison won the day by four points.
On Finals Sunday, the Hurling Club of Madison played an early match against our friends in the Milwaukee Hurling Club. It was a hard-fought, back and forth match the entire time. At the end of regulation, the score was 2-10 to 2-10 leading us to extra time (two 10 minute halves). Despite its best effort, the Hurling Club of Madison was defeated by four points, 2-16 to 2-12.
The overall experience and trip was a success for this small club. The Hurling Club of Madison definitely put themselves on the map as far as Junior C hurling goes in the country.
It's time to take the success the club had in Cleveland into this year's Midwest Hurling Tournament coming up on Saturday, September 14, 2013. The Hurling Club of Madison hopes to see you there!

Denver v Boston 2
Philadelphia v Milwaukee
Portland v Boston 1

The league jerseys for the two Hurling Club of Madison teams participating in this summer's Wisconsin Hurling League are completed. Continuing the club's city league tradition, we have a red set of jerseys for the Brocach Irish Pub team and a blue set of jerseys for The Coopers Tavern team. Not only do the jerseys have the sponsoring pub logo, but they also have the new Wisconsin Hurling League logo and the league team's club logo.
The set of jerseys for the two Fox River Hurling Club teams should get under production next week.
